Description of the Organization
The Christian
Mission is an association of Christian workers
united together to preach the Gospel in its fullness
in the West Indies, South America and to other
foreign fields.
Origin of the Work
In October 1890 at the convention of he
Christian Alliance, Rev. S. H. Bayley, a retired
Wesleyan minister from Barbados and Bro. S. A. Ross
from St. Kitts made an appeal for workers to start a
full Gospel work in the West Indies.
Also present at that meeting were Elder George
Richmond Penny, a Pastor from Attleboro,
Massachusetts, and Bro. F. W. Plummer, an associate
with Dr. Cullis from Boston.
These brethren, along with Elder J. H. Hartman,
prayed about this new mission until, Elder Penny
became convinced that God had called on him to
respond to this
"Macedonian Cry".
The following week, at a convention in Providence,
Rhode Island, USA, Rev. Penny made a call for
workers to accompany him to the West indies.
Those who volunteered were Sis. I. D. Haines, Deacon
J. F. Guild, Elder J. Hartman, Bro. Ross and Rev.
Baily. Those who came later were Sis. Anne Coope and
Sis. Nettie Esterbrookes.
The first meetings were held at The Fisherman's
Mission, the YMCA Halls and Albert Hall. |
